![]() It is likely that Professor Onyx's passive ability, Magecraft, will be a common keyword throughout the Strixhaven set, given its name and how the payoff can be practically anything. Meanwhile, Professor Onyx's -3 loyalty ability will force each opponent to sacrifice their creature with the highest power, which may remind players of the card Crackling Doom from the Khans of Tarkir block (minus dealing damage to the opponent). Effectively, it is black's version of Anticipate, and this will neatly fuel the graveyard with two cards each time. Professor Onyx's +1 loyalty ability will cost one life, but in return, the player may consult the top three cards of their library, then put one into the hand and the rest into the graveyard. ![]() This is quite the payoff for playing noncreature spells, and in black mana, that's often going to involve creature removal spells, reanimation effects, and tricky hand control or discard spells such as Mind Rot or Duress. This is a six-drop planeswalker with five points of starting loyalty, and her passive ability will drain the opponents' life points anytime Professor Onyx's controller casts an instant or sorcery. And then actual gamewinner spells like ] or ] or ] or ].Professor Onyx is definitely Liliana Vess, judging by the Liliana planeswalker type. In order to make it high-powered, you'll need to further invest in adding some spell cast triggers and death triggers. With all the spell copying you can do in the deck, it's possible to regularly go mana neutral or positive with those spells.Īddressing those 2 issues will likely eat up most of your upgrade budget, but it would make the deck a lot more reliable. ![]() If you can, swap in more draw and removal spells that creature treasure tokens as an extra effect. I have found a 3:1 instant to sorcery ratio to work pretty well. You can only copy the first spell each turn with your commander, so you want to be casting on your opponents turns to maximize your value. You need cheap and repeatable token generators like ], ], ], ], etc.įor the actual spell selection, you'll want to trade out a lot of sorceries for instants. If you do decide to upgrade that deck, the two most important steps are upgrading your sac fodder and swapping out sorceries for instants.įor the sac fodder: the included stuff in the deck either requires continuous mana investment to recast from the graveyard, which really slows down how much mana you have for spell slinging, or requires you to cast some big spells that you won't have the sac fodder to copy. I spent over $200 on the upgrades before I started to consider it high powered. Anhelo is my favorite deck to play nowadays, but it is a mess out of the box. Specifically talking about the Anhelo deck you have, it will probably require more than $50 of upgrades to hold its own. But there are some precons that are strong right from the box and can be made into beasts with an extra $50. It really boils down to what the OP needs from his deck.įor the most part, you'll probably make a stronger and more consistent deck with a custom build. If the important factors are being "safe" and easy then precons are the way to go. If the important factors are total cost and power, you are better off brewing your own deck with help from others. Tldr: It just depends on where the focus is. Where if I hadn't been lazy, and I had just bought those 5 cards and brewed my own version I could have saved $50. I started with the precon and was unhappy with how the entire deck functioned so I ended up switching out almost every card, I think I kept 5 original cards from that precon, so I basically had to buy the deck twice. My Sefris deck is a good example of this. In my experience, precons are usually way more expensive when it comes to actual upgrades. But I do see your point that precons do set a kind of floor that makes them good for new players. I also think that a deck that is poorly brewed won't be significantly weaker, especially if that brewer is getting help from friends/ Reddit. OP asked what was stronger, and a well brewed deck is going to be stronger. Ultimately this topic is of little consequence in the big picture. We can disagree with with eachother :) honestly there are pros and cons to each option.
